I have this problem frequently with Word 2013 on Windows viii.1. I will create a file, save it, reopen it for boosted editing, and detect that it has opened as read only. Or Word volition display the message"<filename> was last opened as read-only. Do you want to open as read-only over again?"--even though I did NOT open up it as read simply the previous time.
I would dearest to find a solution to this very annoying problem.

1) Where are you saving the Word documents? Is information technology on a local folder or shared folder?

Thank you for replying.
Let's turn off the Preview Pane if information technology is enabled and verify whether issue re-occurs.

Open Explorer. Select View from the top carte.

On the ribbon, there should be a button "Preview Pane".

Toggle it on or off by pressing the push. You tin can also use ALT+P.

Explorer will tell y'all that Preview is off, considering the phrase "Select file to preview" disappears.

Amazing, I had the exact same problem, on top of having the documents become read-merely it wouldn't let me delete them.
Bulletin: The activity can't be completed because the file is open in Microsoft Word. Close the file and effort again.
I am using Word 2013. I had been using it for several months and then all of a sudden I am having it happen with all of the 2007 and 2010 documents.
To end the read only I created a V2 of every certificate only and then it wouldn't allow me delete V1! I cleared all temp files and emptied the trash and restarted my computer twice to no avail!!!!!! and voila, turned of Preview and trouble gone. Very very strange. Now I can open all versions of the documents and non get Read-But, not happy I wasted hours!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, information technology is repeatable. I just tested information technology, I turned Preview back on and the older documents are Read-but once more. When y'all catechumen them to 2013 the open up fine.
